Post Menopausal Symptoms Q&A

What are postmenopausal symptoms?

Menopause is defined as a 12-month period when you haven't had a period. Once your period has completely stopped, you may still experience significant symptoms related to the decrease in natural hormone levels. Symptoms can include:

  • painful intercourse
  • vaginal dryness
  • thinning of vaginal walls
  • tightening of the vaginal canal
  • vaginal inflammation
  • pain during urination
  • spotting after intercourse
  • frequent urinary tract infections

Some women may also continue to experience night sweats and hot flashes.

What health risks are associated with the postmenopausal years?

Once periods have stopped, the risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and urinary incontinence may all be elevated. Depending on your risk factors and health history, you may be at increased risk for other diseases as well once your production of hormones declines. Dr. Naim can help you assess your risks during your evaluation.

What is hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

After menopause, the body's natural production of hormones declines, and as a result, many processes can be affected and the above symptoms can develop. Hormone replacement therapy uses synthetic hormones to supplement hormone levels to reduce or eliminate symptoms and health risks associated with menopause. Today, bioidentical hormones have been developed which are used and eliminated from the body in the same way as natural hormones which results in fewer side effects.

Besides HRT, are there any other steps I can take to prevent or lessen symptoms?

One of the most important things you can do is have regular well visits and undergo health screenings which can help identify diseases such as heart disease and osteoporosis in their earliest stages. In addition, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, and staying physically active can also help ensure you stay as healthy as possible before and after menopause. Other steps such as using vaginal lubricants and having treatment for incontinence can help address specific symptoms.
